The NH Senator Judd Gregg of the United States Senate Appropriation Committee announced today the approval of $1 million dollars to make significant improvements to the North Conway Village streetscape. The North Conway Village Association (NCVA), a membership organization made up of primarily Village businesses submitted the grant application last spring. The goal of the Association has been to coincide their efforts to improve the visual beauty of this area with the already scheduled construction work planned by the NH DOT to widen Rt. 16. This timing represented an opportunity of a lifetime to enhance the look of the village now and for generations to come. The cost of the enhancement project is estimated to be in the $2.5M range with the majority of the expense being the burying of utility wires and cables. Additional plans include adding brick and granite sidewalks, benches, attractive trash receptacles, crosswalks and landscaping.

Since the mid 1800's, North Conway Village has been the center of community activity in Mt. Washington Valley. The Valley has grown to be one of the top tourist destinations in the world but North Conway Village has remained the heart and soul of this region with dozens of community events taking place in Schouler Park each year. From the Portland Symphony Concerts in the Park, to Art in the Park shows by White Mountain artist. In the winter, the village skating rink appears and is a great source of enjoyment for skaters and spectators. It is also a place where residents and visitors alike come to enjoy the many fine locally owned restaurants, inns, shops and businesses. More than 100 in all and most within walking distance to the Village center.

Imagine driving into North Conway Village and seeing vintage-style street lighting, brick and granite sidewalks and most importantly no utility wires in sight. Your unobstructed views to the north will be the majestic terrain of Mt. Washington and the Presidential Range, to the west, the Moat Mountains and, to the east Cranmore, Kearsarge and Rattlesnake Ridge,

In December 2003, the North Conway Village Association retained the services of engineers and a landscape architect to provide design work and fundraising assistance. The NCVA funded the cost of these consultants through generous donations of its membership and Valley visitors. The NCVA is now in its next phase of an aggressive fundraising campaign for the balance of the funds needed. Planned campaigns include a Buy a Brick-type program called Gift of Granite where residents and tourists can buy a 6"x12" and 12"x12" granite slab that will have their name or that of their designation, etched in stone on the newly bricked walkways planned for the Village Streets.

Street reconstruction is scheduled for 2005 and 2006 as part of Phase 5B of the Route 16 By-Pass project beginning with street improvements and a new water main from Memorial Hospital to the Scenic Vista. Replacement of the water main in the Village should begin in late 2005 or early 2006.
